I have worked for over three decades in the NHS and have amassed a wealth of experience in operational and strategic management of Pathology and Clinical Support Services. I have led on service collaborations and the creation of a laboratory network in England, and latterly, the implementation of early adopter Community Diagnostic Centres following the post-COVID publication of Sir Mike Richards paper in 2020.

I believe passionately in diagnostics as an enabler and facilitator of clinical decision making and recognise Pathology as a critical component of patient pathways. I hope to bring knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to my role in the National Pathology Programme and help introduce and sustain changes in Pathology services which are of real benefit to our patients and workforce.

This is my first role working for the NHS in Wales, but my links with the country include completing my first degree at Cardiff University in the 1980s and living in South Wales and on Anglesey.  I have only been in post since May 2023 but have been really impressed by the Pathology community engagement with meand my team in the National Pathology Programme. You are all involved in key workstreams within the Programme aimed at creating robust and sustainable structural foundations for Pathology services as well as delivering some innovative transformation in the way these services are delivered. There is, of course, much to do but the start has been very positive. 

When not living and breathing all things Pathology(!), I am a keen (and sometimes competitive) runner with a history of racing ultramarathons. I also collect records extensively, much to my wife’s frustration, and am a keen student of the Italian language and now learning Welsh!

I am Adam, consultant in cellular pathology at UHW, Cardiff. I have been a consultant for 13 years, having previously trained in pathology in South Wales after moving here from Nottingham, where I went to medical school. I am originally from Kent, where I still have family and visit often.

I report mostly gastrointestinal pathology specimens as well as some head and neck specimens. I have been laboratory director for Cellular Pathology for five years, and since have been the Clinical Board Director for Clinical Diagnostics and Therapies in Cardiff and Vale. I attend a number of local, regional and tertiary cancer MDTs, and through the laboratory director role I have been involved in a number of regional and local programmes of work, including digital pathology and the WLIMS Programme. 

Since January 2023 I have been the Clinical Lead to the National Pathology Programme. This has been a challenging time as it feels like pathology services are under the most pressure they have ever faced.

I am hoping to evolve some of the ongoing great work that the National Pathology Programme is currently supporting. A real focus is going to have to be on a sustainable workforce, so working with HEIW to support our scientific staff in career progression is something I am keen to engage with in the very near future. There is a real opportunity to drive improvement, certainly in cellular pathology, but in all disciplines by rolling out innovative and new technology, not least a digital pathology platform that will help get the right result to the patient in a timely manner. My key driver is for pathology to no longer be a service confined to the background of clinical pathways but to move it towards the front and be seen as a key implementer in patient care.

I’m Tahir, a Practice Educator Facilitator (PEF) for Pathology services in South East Wales. I have over 15 years experience in diagnostic pathology, both in the public and private sector.  

I joined ABUHB as a Biomedical Scientist in 2006 and progressed to a Biochemistry senior, acquiring a position as a training officer and automation lead. I then went on to manage the All Wales IP5 Covid Laboratory in Newport and then to work for Siemens as a Product Health Manager. 

My key interests include teaching, service improvement and innovation, and I believe passionately in diagnostics being a facilitator for clinical decision making. 

I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge, especially as our pathology services are under immense pressure. I plan to contribute to the ongoing work that the National Pathology Programme is undertaking with a focus on developing a sustainable workforce, training and education across all disciplines.

I am keen to hear of the issues surrounding training across pathology with the aim to providing a solution. I feel privileged to be working with the Programme to make a positive impact for our service providers and service users. 
 

I am a Senior Project Manager and joined the National Pathology Programme in February 2020.  I am currently working on the digital workstream which includes the National Digital Cellular Pathology Project and various AI/computational pathology projects. 
 
I have worked within NHS Wales for over 24 years on various local and national projects and programmes, including, most recently, eight years working as part of the Lymphoedema Network Wales team.

I started my NHS career in 1984 with South Glamorgan Family Practitioner Committee.  In 1989, I took a career break before returning in 1999 having graduated with a BA (Hons) in Business Management from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff.  

Since then, I have worked in a variety of roles across different NHS organisations in South Wales, including Cancer Services Manager in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, a Performance Analyst with the Welsh Kidney Network and a Senior Project Manager in the Wales Cardiac Network before joining the National Pathology Programme.

I am leading the Programme’s workstreams for Commissioning and Procurement, Service Configuration and supporting the Sustainability workstream.
 

I joined NHS Wales and the National Pathology Programme in 2016, after a long career break.  Before that, I had worked in several roles in the British Library and in the Department of the Environment in central London.

I am currently involved with the Programme’s Workforce, Training and Education workstream and I’m keen to take forward the actions to support staff and service delivery.

I joined the NHS in October 2020 after being made redundant due to Covid. Previously I worked as a Programme Coordinator and Disability Employment Specialist supporting a national pre-placement programme with Remploy for 12 years. 

My first role with the NHS was within Cwm Taf Morgannwg supporting senior management in the Bridgend Integrated Locality Group (ILG). In November 2021 I joined the Wales Cancer Network as a Senior Project Support Officer within the Single Cancer Pathway Team, which took me back to a project support role – being involved in projects that support others is where I feel I belong. 

I joined the National Pathology team in February 2023. I have really enjoyed learning more about the pathology field and meeting new colleagues, I lead on the communication and engagement work for the programme. The projects I am involved in are exciting and challenging, I am excited to continue to raise the pathology profile in Wales.

I joined the NHS in 2010 and have extensive experience in healthcare administration.  Beginning at Cervical Screening Wales, I supported various projects and arranged various training events.  

Transitioning then to ABUHB with the Palliative Care Team, I enhanced my abilities in providing PA support and coordinating multidisciplinary team meetings.  

Currently I am a Senior Project Support Officer with the National Pathology Programme, supporting various projects, budget monitoring and analysing data to help drive improvements.  I have three children and enjoy coming to work for peace and quiet!

Hi, my name is Jo and I joined the National Pathology Programme as a Senior Project Support Officer in January 2023. I assist with various aspects of programme administration and reaching out to staff and patients through our comms projects.

Holding a BA, MA and MPhil in English Literature I’m passionate about the writing aspects of my role, in particular supporting with the compiling and distribution of the quarterly National Pathology Programme newsletter.

I started my career journey in 2018 with NHS England where I held three different roles with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust until I relocated to Cardiff in September 2023, including a secretarial role in Oncology and reception team supervisor for the Therapy department. 

My love of the vibrant and varied city of Cardiff drew me to Wales from my hometown of Cheltenham, and I’m keen to continue my career journey with NHS Wales. I like to keep active in my spare time, having recently joined a female choir and am also looking to get back to playing netball. I’m a keen football fan and can occasionally be seen in the supporters stands of the Cheltenham Town Robins football ground alongside my Dad on a Saturday afternoon.
