About Us

The NHS Wales Executive is a new, national support function, operational from 1 April, 2023.

Our key purpose is to:
Drive improvements in the quality and safety of care - resulting in better and more equitable outcomes, access and patient experience, reduced variation, and improvements in population health.
Our mandate and remit letter from the Welsh Government.
The NHS Wales Executive Work Plan 2023/24.

The NHS Executive will provide strong leadership and strategic direction – enabling, supporting and directing NHS Wales to transform clinical services in line with national priorities and standards.

We will do this through:

  • Strengthening national leadership and support for quality improvement
  • Providing more central direction to ensure a consistent and equitable approach to national and regional planning based on outcomes
  • Enabling stronger performance management arrangements, including capacity to challenge and support organisations that are not operating as expected.

The NHS Executive is not a new organisation: rather we are a hybrid function bringing together:

  • Delivery Unit
  • Finance Delivery Unit
  • Improvement Cymru
  • Health Collaborative

Improvement Cymru will retain their name and brand for now. From 1 April 2023, the Improvement Cymru brand will be used alongside the NHS Wales Executive brand where relevant.

Our values and culture

The NHS Wales Executive combines a wealth of NHS and Civil Service experience.

By working together, we will develop a culture of inclusion where people are supported to maximise their potential through equity and opportunity.

There will be a carefully managed transition from individual bodies into one, shared corporate vision to embed a culture of quality, innovation and digital expertise.

The goal is to achieve an inclusive and respectful workforce culture where staff feel valued and have a shared sense of identity and belonging.
