Cancer Information and Intelligence

The National Strategic Clinical Network for Cancer is supported by the Information and Intelligence Team. The team includes the Information Specialists who provide operational support to Health Boards with ways of working guidance for both Canisc and the newly implemented Cancer Dataset Forms. The team also supports Health Boards by submitting to the National Cancer Audits on their behalf. These activities extend to supporting Health Boards with their collection, validation and analysis of data for newly diagnosed cancer patients.

The “Cancer Improvement Plan for NHS Wales 2023-2026” has a number of key priorities for information and intelligence, as listed below:

  • A cancer version of the updated NHS Digital Strategy
  • A roadmap to address the issue of cancer data silos
  • A refreshed Cancer Performance Framework
  • National Audits
  • Successful implementation of the cancer dataset forms

These priorities are being taken forward through a number of workstreams and projects in collaboration with Wales Cancer Network, Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW), Welsh Government, Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (WCISU) and Health Boards.

To ensure a co-ordinated approach, a Cancer Data and Reporting Strategic Oversight facilitated by the National Strategic Clinical Network for Cancer maintains oversight.
